The civil and criminal records are located at the Clerk of Circuit Courts, 18
N. County, Waukegan 847-360-6600. Enter from Washington Street.
You will have to pass a security checkpoint, so you may want to leave any
nonessentials outside. Knives, scissors or any item that might be used as
a weapon will be confiscated by security personnel. Follow the steps to
the basement. There are several computer terminals available for your use;
some on the right, and others in the Viewing Room. Each terminal is marked
CRIMINAL/CIVIL.

note:
when entering the case number, omit the zeroes that follow the prefix. for
example, 97LM0000356 becomes 97LM356.

and defendant, dates, etc. The first two digits of the file number
represent the year. The next two characters (LM in our example) indicate
the criminal or civil category. Here are some possible categories:

With a little
practice, you'll be navigating through the screens easily. If you have any
questions, you can ask the staff in the Viewing Room.
You can view the
actual case file in the Viewing Room. Write the file number on a scrap of
paper; give it to the room attendant. The file will be delivered in a few
minutes, and the clerk will hold your driver's license
until you hand the file back to them.
note:
you may not remove the file from the viewing room. if you need copies of
any pages, paper-clip those pages and ask the attendant. do not remove any
pages from the file.

You don't have to do the background checking yourself. Many
companies will provide this service for a fee.
Ferret Diversified Services,
located in Highland Park, Illinois, provides credit, criminal and
eviction background reports at a discount for members of the
Lake County Apartment Owners
Association.
Screeningreports.com,
located in Bensenville, provides an eight-county search for a reasonable
fee. Normally, Screeningreports.com limits their services to clients
with a minimum of 100 units. They will waive their minimum
requirement for LCAOA Members.
